  17. <p>     Now that the threat of a nuclear war with Moscow is fading,
  18. atomic-weapons designers have been casting around for a
  19. mission. Some of them--including physicist Edward Teller, the
  20. father of the H-bomb--have proposed using a Super Nuke to
  21. destroy a huge asteroid that could extinguish human life if it
  22. crashed into Earth.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     Though many scientists dismiss the notion of blowing up
  25. killer asteroids as a last-ditch attempt to find some role for
  26. nuclear weapons, they do think keeping an eye on runaway
  27. asteroids makes sense. This week, after several months of
  28. studying the issue, the National Aeronautics and Space
  29. Administration will urge Congress to establish a tracking and
  30. detection system that could sound the alert if a big chunk of
  31. celestial rock starts heading this way.

  33. <p>     The watchers are probably in for a long wait. The last
  34. time such a cataclysmic collision took place was 65 million
  35. years ago, when dinosaurs still walked the planet.
